How to Choose a Korean Toner

Korean toners are usually designed to hydrate, soothe and prepare the skin for the next steps in your routine rather than simply removing oil or leaving skin feeling stripped.

If your skin feels dry or dehydrated, look for hydrating toners with ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid. Dull skin may enjoy a nourishing Rice toner, while sensitive-feeling skin often benefits from simple, soothing formulas.

Texture matters too. Watery toners feel light and easy to layer, while milky or essence-like toners provide a more nourishing layer of hydration.

  • Dull & Uneven-Looking Skin

For skin that looks tired, flat or lacking glow.

    Best textures:
Milky toners • Essence toners • Nourishing watery toners

    Look for:
    Rice • Niacinamide • PDRN • Peptides

    Why:
Glow-focused toners can help add hydration and create a smoother, more radiant-looking base for the rest of your routine. Rice-based formulas are especially popular in Korean skincare for this kind of nourishing glow.

    Krush tip:
A glowing routine still starts with hydration. Don’t feel like every step needs to contain a strong brightening active.

  • Dry & Dehydrated Skin

For skin that feels tight, thirsty or lacking bounce.

    Best textures:
Milky toners • Essence toners • Hydrating watery toners

    Look for:
Hyaluronic Acid • Glycerin • Panthenol • Snail Mucin

    Why:
Dehydrated skin needs water, so hydrating toners can be an easy way to add an extra layer before your serum and moisturiser. If your skin is also naturally dry, a slightly richer milky or essence-like toner may feel more comfortable.

    Krush tip:
Apply toner while skin is still slightly damp, then follow with serum and moisturiser.

  • Sensitive & Stressed Skin

For skin that easily feels reactive, uncomfortable or overwhelmed.

    Best textures:
Simple watery toners • Lightweight essence toners

    Look for:
    Heartleaf • Centella • Beta-Glucan • Hyaluronic Acid

    Why:
Sensitive-feeling skin often benefits from a simple toner focused on hydration and soothing care rather than strong exfoliating ingredients.

    Krush tip:
When your skin feels stressed, keep the routine simple. Toner should make skin feel more comfortable not tingly or tight.

 Korean Toner FAQ💜

Do I actually need a toner in my skincare routine?

Toner isn’t essential for everyone, but in Korean skincare it often acts as the final step of cleansing and the first step of skincare.

After cleansing, toner helps refresh the skin, add the first layer of hydration and prepare it for the products that follow, such as essences, serums and moisturisers.

Modern K-beauty toners are usually very different from the harsh, alcohol-heavy toners many people remember. Most are designed to leave skin feeling hydrated, comfortable and ready for the rest of your routine.

Watery, milky, essence toner or toner pads, which one should I choose?

Choose based on your skin needs and how you like to use your routine.

Watery toners are lightweight, fast-absorbing and easy to layer, making them a great choice for oily, combination or dehydrated skin.

Milky toners feel richer and more nourishing, so they can work especially well for dry, dehydrated or colder-weather skin.

Essence toners sit somewhere in between, offering more hydration and body than a watery toner without feeling too heavy.

Toner pads are a convenient option if you want quick, even application. Depending on the formula, they can be used to hydrate, soothe, gently exfoliate or target texture and they’re especially handy for busy routines or focused care on specific areas.

Can I apply more than one layer of toner?

Yes. Lightweight hydrating toners can be applied in two or more thin layers if your skin enjoys extra hydration.

However, more layers aren’t automatically better. One comfortable layer followed by a good serum and moisturiser may be all your skin needs.

Avoid repeatedly layering exfoliating or active-heavy toners in the same way.

Should I use an exfoliating toner or a hydrating toner?

That depends on what your skin needs.

A hydrating toner can usually be used regularly to add moisture and comfort. An exfoliating toner containing ingredients such as AHAs or BHAs is a treatment product and may only need to be used a few times per week depending on the formula and your skin.

If your skin feels dry, sensitive or barrier-compromised, prioritising hydration over extra exfoliation is often the gentler approach.
