How to Care for Dry & Dehydrated Skin

Dry and dehydrated skin can feel similar, but they’re not quite the same. Dry skin is a skin type that naturally produces less oil, while dehydrated skin is a temporary condition caused by a lack of water which means even oily or combination skin can become dehydrated.

If your skin feels tight, rough, flaky or uncomfortable, focus on gentle cleansing, layers of hydration and a moisturiser that helps prevent moisture from escaping. Ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Glycerin, Panthenol, Ceramides and Squalane can all be useful additions to a dry or dehydrated skincare routine.

  • My Skin Feels Tight & Dehydrated

Look for: Lightweight hydrating toners, essences and serums

    Ingredients to look for:
Hyaluronic Acid · PDRN · Snail Mucin · Panthenol

If your skin feels tight even though it isn’t particularly dry or flaky, dehydration may be the issue. Layering lightweight hydration before your moisturiser can help skin feel plumper, softer and more comfortable.

Krush Tip: Apply hydrating products while your skin is still slightly damp, then follow with moisturiser to help seal everything in.

  • My Skin Feels Dry, Rough or Flaky

Look for: Creamy toners, nourishing serums and richer moisturisers

    Ingredients to look for:
Ceramides · Rice · Panthenol · Hyaluronic Acid

Dry skin usually needs more than water alone. Look for formulas that combine hydration with nourishing lipids to help reduce that dry, rough feeling and support the skin barrier.

Krush Tip: If a lightweight gel cream isn’t cutting it anymore, especially during colder weather, try switching to a richer cream.

FAQ💜

Dry Skin vs Dehydrated Skin, What’s the Difference?

Dry skin is a skin type. It naturally produces less sebum, so it may feel rough, flaky or tight and often prefers richer creams and nourishing ingredients.

Dehydrated skin is a skin condition caused by a lack of water. It can happen to any skin type (even oily skin) and may leave skin feeling tight, looking dull or showing fine dehydration lines.

You can also be both dry and dehydrated. In that case, try layering a hydrating toner or serum underneath a richer moisturiser.

Can oily skin be dehydrated?

Yes. Oil and water are two different things. Your skin can produce plenty of sebum while still lacking water, which can leave it feeling oily on the surface but tight or dehydrated underneath. Lightweight hydrating toners and serums can work particularly well in this situation.

Should I use a serum or moisturiser for dehydrated skin?

Ideally, they do different jobs. A hydrating serum can add lightweight moisture, while your moisturiser helps keep that hydration from escaping. If your skin is particularly dehydrated, layering the two can work better than relying on either one alone.

Can I use retinol or exfoliating acids if my skin is dry?

Yes, but take it slowly. Retinoids and exfoliating acids can sometimes increase dryness or irritation, so introduce them gradually and support your routine with plenty of hydration and a comfortable moisturiser. If your skin feels irritated or compromised, reduce the frequency of strong actives.
